Environment

The engines in gas-powered lawn equipment create air pollution that can significantly impact lung health. A combination of chemicals and fine particulate matter can be inhaled by people using the equipment, as well as people nearby. Workers who use gas-powered equipment, older adults, children and people with chronic illness are at greatest risk.

According to the Government of Canada, operating a gas-powered lawn mower for one hour can emit as much pollution as driving a car over 480 kilometres.

Transitioning to electric lawn equipment improves air quality, leading to a healthier environment.

Lawn Swap rebate program

Central Okanagan residents may be eligible for a rebate when trading out old gas-powered equipment for new electric equipment. The rebate covers up to $150 (no more than 50% of the cost) for new electric lawnmowers, leaf blowers, trimmers or chainsaws.

  • Gas-powered equipment being replaced must be recycled.
  • New electric equipment achieves noise rating limits. See Resources on the City of Kelowna's Air Quality webpage.
    • Lawnmowers: up to 75dB
    • Leaf blowers: up to 65dB

Lawn Swap: Go electric rebate form

The annual deadline for application is November 15.

Your application does not guarantee a rebate, as they are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Rebates will be paid by cheque and mailed to the address provided. Receipts/invoices must be in the same calendar year as the rebate application.

Steps for lawn equipment rebate

Central Okanagan residents must follow these steps for the Lawn Swap: Go Electric rebate.

Purchase new electric lawn equipment (receipt required)

Receipt or invoice for new electric equipment must be from the same calendar year as the rebate application.

  • New electric equipment achieves noise rating limits. See Resources on the City of Kelowna's Air Quality webpage.
    • Lawnmowers: up to 75dB
    • Leaf blowers: up to 65dB
Recycle old gas-powered lawn equipment (proof required)

Old gas-powered equipment must be recycled and proof of recycling must be submitted. Gas tanks must be empty. Drain and dispose of any remaining oil and gas from your old lawn equipment.

Note the model and engine type (2 or 4-stroke engine) of your old equipment for the rebate application form.

Receipt must be from the same calendar year as the rebate application. These three facilities provide recycling receipts you can use for your proof:

  • ABC Recycling
  • Knox Mountain Metals
  • Planet Earth ($5 fee)

These two facilities do not provide recycling receipts and you must take two photos of your gas powered lawn equipment (one close-up and one with the facility in the background) when you drop-off:

  • Glenmore Landfill (fees apply)
    • Note: metal recycling drop-off is through the scale entrance, not in the general recycling area.
  • Westside Residential Disposal and Recycling Centre

Find recycling facility locations and hours at Recycling Council of British Columbia.
