Business waste

Business waste makes up 70% of the waste in the Central Okanagan. Learning how to dispose of waste in a responsible way contributes to the sustainability of your business and will help extend the life of our only local landfill.

Garbage and recycling options

  • Hire a waste hauling company for both recyclables and garbage.
  • Self-haul:
    • Take garbage to the Glenmore Landfill (2710-2720 John Hindle Drive, Kelowna). Commercial recyclables are not accepted at the Glenmore Landfill.
    • Take recyclables to Planet Earth Recycling (1400 Industrial Road, West Kelowna). This is the only depot that accepts self-haul commercial recyclables.
  • For larger, regular volumes of recyclables, set up an account with Cascades Recovery Kelowna.

Mandatory recyclables

Waste loads found with mandatory recyclables mixed in, are subject to a $150/tonne mandatory recyclables surcharge.

Disposal guide for mandatory recyclables

For a full list of rates, please visit the City of Kelowna's Glenmore Landfill website

Set up  a program to manage waste

  1. Put someone in charge
    • Appoint a team leader or set up a Green Team with representatives from different departments.
  2. Find out what’s in your garbage
    • Conduct a waste audit.
    • Consider hiring a consultant for a professional audit if needed.
  3. Design a program
    • Based on the audit, determine which materials to collect and how (private hauler or drop-off).
    • Contact your current hauler to discuss options.
    • Ensure bins are easy to find and clearly labeled for convenience.
  4. Monitor and review
    • Regularly monitor to ensure effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
