Garbage

Weekly curbside garbage collection is provided to single family homes in the Central Okanagan with the exception of homes on First Nation land (Westbank First Nation reserves and OKIB Duck Lake Reserve). Residents in condominiums and apartments will have garbage collected through a private waste hauler and should contact their landlord or strata council for further information.

What goes in your garbage cart?

Accepted materials

  • Regular household garbage
  • Kitchen waste
  • Containers with food or residue
  • Diapers
  • Broken window glass, dishes, mirror, ceramics
  • Soiled or waxed cardboard (food or oil soaked)
  • Animal waste, loose grit/sawdust (must be bagged)
  • Styrofoam peanuts or chips
  • Tissue, napkins, paper towel

Not accepted in the garbage

  • No liquids
  • No hot ashes
  • No wood, drywall, metal, concrete, bricks or renovation waste
  • No hazardous materials (motor oil, paint, chemicals, pesticides) - take to depot
  • No batteries, electronics, small appliances, power tools - take to depot
  • No beverage containers - take to depot
  • No light bulbs, tubes or light fixtures - take to depot
  • No recyclables including cardboard, paper, plastic containers, tin cans 
  • No yard/garden waste - put in yard waste cart or take to depot
  • No Styrofoam, glass jars - take to depot
