Garbage

All waste generated in the Central Okanagan is transported to the Glenmore Landfill. The Regional District and member municipalities collect garbage in curbside carts from single family homes on a weekly basis.

Apartments and condos are serviced by private waste haulers and questions should be directed to strata councils, property managers or the specific waste hauler.

Residents not serviced by curbside cart collection in the Central Okanagan West Electoral Area can use their local transfer station:

Residents on Westbank First Nation (WFN) Reserves #9 and #10 and Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB), Duck Lake Reserve #7 are not serviced by RDCO curbside garbage collection. Contact band offices for questions.

What goes in your garbage cart?

  • Regular household garbage
  • Kitchen waste
  • Containers with food or residue
  • Diapers
  • Broken window glass, dishes, mirror, ceramics
  • Soiled or waxed cardboard (food or oil soaked)
  • Animal waste
  • Loose grit/sawdust (must be bagged)
  • Styrofoam peanuts or chips
  • Tissue, napkins, paper towel

What stays out of your garbage cart?

  • No liquids
  • No hot ashes
  • No construction or renovation waste (e.g. wood, drywall, metal, concrete, bricks)
  • No hazardous materials – motor oil, paint, chemicals, pesticides (see hazardous waste)
  • No batteries, electronics, small appliances, power tools (take to a recycling depot)
  • No beverage containers (take to a recycling depot)
  • No light bulbs, tubes or light fixtures (take to a recycling depot)
  • No styrofoam, glass jars (take to a recycling depot)
  • No recycling
  • No yard waste

 

Extra garbage?

Haul extra garbage to the Glenmore Landfill or Westside Residential Disposal and Recycling Centre.

Tag-a-bag

The RDCO offers tag-a-bag stickers for up to two additional bags/containers of garbage. The stickers are $2.50 each and are available at the following locations:

For residents in the Central Okanagan East and Central Okanagan West Electoral areas: Ellison, Joe Rich, June Springs Road, South Lakeshore Road, North Westside Road, Trader's Cove, Wilson's Landing, Trepanier Valley, and Brent Road.
