Living Here

All waste generated in the Central Okanagan is transported to the Glenmore Landfill. Disposing of waste in a responsible way contributes to sustainability in your community and will help extend the life of our only local landfill.

Materials must be secured and covered with a tarp for transport to any disposal location. Before heading to any disposal location ensure that your materials are accepted. See banned materials disposal guide for details.

This facility is for residential use only. No commercial users allowed, including small businesses or landscapers.

Hours of operation

Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (gate closes at 3:50 p.m.)
Closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays (operational requirements as materials are hauled to the Glenmore Landfill)

Holiday closures: December 25 and January 1

Note: mixed loads will be charged the highest rate of the waste type included in a mixed load.

Recycling Depot

You are responsible for sorting the following items into the appropriate bins.

  • No light fixtures or light bulbs

  • No radioactive waste
  • No small appliances/power tools
  • No used oil or hazardous waste
  • *Note: Cooking oil and grease are no longer accepted for recycling due to attracting bears. Please absorb cooking oil with sawdust or kitty litter, double bag and place in your household garbage.

 

Westside landfill (permanently closed)

The Westside Landfill was operated at this site as a municipal solid waste landfill from 1960 to 2010. 

Landfill closure and monitoring
Location: 2640 Asquith Road, West Kelowna, BC (site of Westside Residential Waste and Recycling Centre).


The Westside Landfill was operated as a municipal solid waste landfill under Operational Certificate (OC) PR#12217 issued by British Columbia Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy (ENV). The Westside Landfill received 782,395 tonnes of municipal solid waste from 1960 to 2010 when it was closed and partially covered.

A Closure Plan was accepted by the ENV in 2017 and closure works completed in 2018. Regular monitoring is carried out as outlined in the OC and the Updated Landfill Monitoring Program and details are available in the annual reports.
