Location

Located at 2640 Asquith Road (off Shannon Lake Road) in West Kelowna for residential use only, no commercial users allowed including small businesses or landscapers.

Hours of operation

Open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Gate closes at 3:50 p.m. Closed Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
(Closed on December 25 and January 1)

Acceptable items

You are responsible for sorting the following items into the appropriate bins:

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Containers (plastic packaging, tin cans, cartons, disposable cups and lids, metal lids)
  • Glass (remove lids and put with containers)
  • Styrofoam (separate colour from white)
  • Plastic bags and overwrap (bread bags, shopping bags, wrap around paper towels etc.)
  • Other flexible plastic packaging (crinkly plastics, stand up pouches, cereal and cracker bags, net bags, bubble wrap)

Unaccepted items

  • No electronics or computers
  • No small appliances/power tools
  • No light fixtures or light bulbs
  • No used oil or hazardous waste
  • No drywall - take to the Glenmore Landfill
  • No asphalt or concrete - take to the Glenmore Landfill
  • No dirt, rock, sod - take to Glenmore Landfill 
  • No commercial waste - take to Glenmore Landfill
  • No ignitable or smoldering waste

  • No radioactive waste

NOTE:  cooking oil and grease are no longer accepted for recycling due to attracting bears in the area, please absorb cooking oil with sawdust or kitty litter, double bag and place in your household garbage.

 

 Westside landfill (permanently closed)

The Westside Landfill was operated as a municipal solid waste landfill under Operational Certificate (OC) PR#12217 issued by British Columbia Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy (ENV). The Westside Landfill received 782,395 tonnes of municipal solid waste from 1960 to 2010 when it was closed and partially covered.

Closure Plan was accepted by the ENV in 2017 and closure works completed in 2018. Regular monitoring is carried out as outlined in the OC and the Updated Landfill Monitoring Program and details are available in the annual reports.
