Yard waste

Yard waste is collected every other week from March 1 to the end of December 31. This service is provided to residents of Kelowna, West Kelowna, Peachland, Lake Country, Electoral Area East.

What goes in your yard waste cart?

Accepted items

  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Weeds
  • Plant trimmings
  • Branches and yard prunings up to 5 cm (2 inch) in diameter AND less than 1 m (3 feet) long
  • Pine needles and cones
  • Pumpkins
  • Fruit droppings
  • Small amounts of bark mulch

In colder weather, please keep items in your cart loose as they can freeze and won't empty when the cart is tipped into the collection truck.  On your collection day check that the lid opens and stir materials inside to ensure they empty easily.

Not accepted

  • No plastic, paper or compostable bags
  • No dirt, sod, rocks or tree stumps
  • No street sweepings, sand, gravel
  • No kitchen or food waste
  • No diapers
  • No used tissue or paper towels
  • No garbage
  • No animal feces or cat litter
  • No construction or renovation materials
  • No agricultural or commercial waste
  • No landscape fabric
  • No landscape edging
  • No flower pots
  • No large volumes of bark mulch or decomposed mulch that looks like dirt (makes cart too heavy)

Cart upgrades

Residents can upgrade their existing 240 L yard waste cart to 360 L and can also request up to two additional 360 L yard waste carts through their municipality.  Fees apply for yard waste upgrades and additional carts. Cart upgrade information can be found here
