The Government of Canada and Federation of Canadian Municipalities have awarded a grant to the Regional District to assist with long-term planning for its Westside Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The $50,000 contribution through the Municipal Asset Management Program will be used by the RDCO to complete a comprehensive Asset Management Plan for the facility, located off Gellatly Road in West Kelowna.
Regional District Board Chair Loyal Wooldridge says “this funding is fantastic news for the communities served by our regional facility. It’s crucial to proactively plan and understand the life-cycle replacement requirements for such a complex facility that serves Westside communities and to protect the environment.” Wooldridge adds “this plan will help identify the life expectancy of various components of the plant so that we can prudently budget funds that will be needed over the long-term to ensure continued reliable service for residents and businesses. We are grateful to FCM for this important grant to better serve residents.”
The plant provides three stages of wastewater treatment for approximately 42,000 people on the west side of Okanagan Lake. Each day, the facility receives and treats an average of just over 11,700 cubic meters (11.7 million litres) of wastewater from businesses and households in West Kelowna, Peachland and Westbank First Nation Reserves #9 and #10.
