Seeking waste-warriors from Multi-Family Building Residents & Property Managers
The Regional District of Central Okanagan’s Waste Reduction Office is launching a series of tools and resources for residents of multi-family properties, condos and apartment buildings in the Central Okanagan to support them in their recycling efforts.
These resources were developed in consultation with GreenStep Solutions in 2019-2020, where common barriers to effective recycling at multi-family properties were identified through a series of waste audits, direct resident engagement, and surveys.
The multi-family education program includes free, online toolkits to help raise awareness about current recycling and diversion programs, plus ideas for how to create less waste. Also included in the program are both virtual- and in-person workshops to give residents of multi-family buildings and property managers the chance to participate and learn more.
“This new program offers easy to access guidance on the best approaches to dealing with waste no matter where you live, in a condo, apartment, or strata. We’re here to help demystify the recycling and waste diversion process with a raft of resources, from online to in person learning models. This program is open to both residents and property managers, where you can get free information, have your voice heard, ask questions and learn, as well as build community in your building around waste reduction.” says Rae Stewart, Waste Reduction Facilitator for the Regional District.
A virtual recycling workshop will take place via Zoom on Tuesday, April 12 from 7 - 8 p.m. Residents and property managers in the Central Okanagan can register at rdco.com/multifamily. RDCO Waste Reduction staff will be online to answer specific recycling questions.
The Recycling Education Program will include a number of opportunities for residents and property managers to participate and learn more through:
- Recycling area revamp: a basic recycling area layout consultation for property managers, where signage/stickers for your room and bins would be provided if needed.
- On-site demonstration workshop: training for residents on how to separate materials at home, what goes in on-site bins, what goes to the depot/other locations, and ideas on small-space storage solutions.
- Lobby event: could precede or follow the demonstration workshops, or be hosted as a stand-alone event, offering an information table to respond to questions from building residents.
This program will run from March 14 through May 31. Both residents and property managers will have the option to sign-up for this program through the RDCO website.
