Updated Indigenous Land Acknowledgement
The Regional Board has received for information an updated acknowledgement as a further respectful step on the path toward Truth and Reconciliation. The new Land Acknowledgement was inspired as a demonstration of commitment toward two of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s 94 Calls to Action. The new Land Acknowledgement recognizes that the syilx/Okangan people have been on the tm̓xʷúlaʔxʷ (land) since time immemorial and serves as a reminder of everyone’s responsibility to protect and respect the land we are privileged to share. The Land Acknowledgement was reviewed in consultation with members and senior staff from the Okanagan Nation Alliance, Westbank First Nation, and Okanagan Indian Band. It will be declared prior to Regional District meetings and events:
The RDCO acknowledges our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded tm̓xʷúlaʔxʷ (land) of the syilx / Okanagan people who have resided here since time immemorial. We recognize, honour, and respect the syilx / Okanagan lands upon which we live, work, and play.
