Election Officers and bylaw updated
The Regional Board has appointed the officials that will conduct the Electoral Area Directors and school trustee elections in the Central Okanagan East and Central Okanagan West Electoral Areas. Corporate Officer Karen Needham is the Chief Election Officer while Corie Griffiths and Sandi Horning are Deputy Chief Election Officers. The Board also adopted a new Election and Assent Voting Bylaw which authorizes expanded mail ballot voting for all eligible electoral area residents as recently permitted under the Local Government Act. General voting will be held on Saturday, October 15, with additional voting opportunities and polling locations to be determined by the Chief Election Officer.
Regional Emergency Program adjustments
The Regional Board has received a report from the Emergency Program coordinator outlining some changes for this year for the Central Okanagan Emergency program. With the Province expanding the use of an emergency notification system for flood and wildfire events, local emergency operations staff will be trained in implementing the tool to support issuing evacuation alerts and orders. As well, adjustments are being made to the emergency operations centre to increase efficiency and reduce staffing impacts on local governments.
The Regional Board supports a RDCO application to the Union of BC Municipalities Community Excellence Awards for the Phase 3 Flood Mitigation Planning project in the Excellence in Sustainability category. The project involved extensive collaboration with Indigenous communities, local governments and stakeholders building on the work of the Regional Floodplain Management Plan to develop a strategic resource guide supporting non-structural flood mitigation actions.
Planning Applications considered
The Regional Board considered the following planning applications:
- Conditional approval for a Development Permit DP-21-18 and amending a “non- disturbance zone” covenant for works associated with the phased residential development of Sunset Ranch. The applicant proposes developing a mix of single detached and duplex housing on the remaining lands within the Sunset Ranch Comprehensive Development Plan to include 36-lot and 60-lot strata subdivisions.
- The Regional Board has given conditional approval to a FrontCounter BC referral application (file 558796) from the Friends of the South Slopes Society (RDCO file CL-22-03) for a Crown land tenure to permit rehabilitation and maintenance of an existing non-motorized trail system in the KLO Creek Myra Recreation Area.
