The Okanagan-Kootenay Sterile Insect Release (SIR) program is an environmentally responsible, area-wide approach to control codling moth pest populations, one of the BC tree fruit industry’s most damaging and costly pests. The program operates in the fruit-growing regions of the Okanagan, Similkameen, and Shuswap Valleys as a partnership of four regional districts. The program’s emphasis is on raising and releasing sterile moths into commercial orchards to disrupt the codling moth mating process.
The RDCO appoints two members to this program each year.
The SIR main office is located in the Regional District of Central Okanagan office at 1450 KLO Road in Kelowna.
