Solid waste management plan

In British Columbia, each regional district is mandated by the Provincial Environmental Management Act to develop a Solid Waste Management Plan that provides a long term vision for solid waste management, including waste diversion and disposal activities. Plans are updated on a regular basis to ensure that they reflect the current needs of the regional district, as well as current market conditions, technologies and regulations.

After significant public consultation, our plan was approved by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy on February 20, 2020. You can view the final Solid Waste Management Plan.

Solid Waste Management Plan

 Step 1

We compiled information on our current waste management system as well as reviewed the success of the 2006 plan.

 Step 2

We analyzed and evaluated various waste management options to be included in the new plan.

 Step 3

We gathered feedback from residents, businesses and other stakeholders on the draft plan. A final plan was then prepared based on public feedback.

 Step 4

We submitted our plan to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. The Ministry approved the final plan on February 20, 2020.

 Step 5

Five-year review of the plan's effectiveness to be completed by December 31, 2024.
