Hillside DPAs
Hillside DPAs help protect development from hazardous conditions to support subdivision, road building and construction on hillsides.
These areas have been established through interpretation of provincial Terrain Resource Information Management, contour data and identification of lands containing slopes 30% or greater.
Objectives
- Protect and enhance the natural characteristics of the hillsides.
- Protect hillsides in a manner that minimizes damage to property and developments (both the property under application and neighbouring properties) from erosion, soil instability, rock fall, landslides or other identified hazards.
- Maintain the natural topography and maximize the retention of existing landscape, vegetation and soils.
- Protect the natural environment and drainage patterns.
- Prevent the substantial re-contouring of lands to facilitate development.
Technical analysis
In most cases, a geotechnical assessment prepared by a qualified environmental professional will be required. Staff will confirm the relevant professional needed for your project. When a professional report has been accepted by the Regional District, those recommendations will be used to establish conditions for the development permit.
