Sensitive terrestrial ecosystem DPAs
Sensitive terrestrial ecosystem DPAs help protect important natural areas, ecosystems and biological diversity. These areas also help reduce risks to development from hazardous conditions.
These areas have been established to include coniferous woodland, grassland, sparsely vegetated and mature forest ecosystems as identified in the Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory. The RDCO is committed to the protection of identified areas of high ecological and natural value. Terrestrial ecosystems in the Central Okanagan support a number of species on the BC Red, Blue and Yellow List (at risk) and are a critical component to the health, vitality and economy of the local community.
Objectives
- Identify and protect sensitive ecosystems.
- Support rural land use in a way that best conserves important and at-risk ecosystems.
- Protect the ecological attributes and socio-economic values common to all sensitive terrestrial ecosystems.
- Ensure land development and new subdivisions are planned in a way that protects sensitive terrestrial ecosystems.
- Protect sensitive terrestrial ecosystems through buffers – protected zones around these ecosystems.
- Identify feasible habitat corridors connecting core conservation and significant habitat areas.
Technical analysis
In most cases, an environmental impact assessment prepared by a qualified environmental professional will be required. Staff will confirm the relevant professional needed for your project. Where a report has been accepted by the Regional District, recommendations will be used to establish conditions for the development permit.
