Gas-powered lawn equipment produces air and noise pollution that affects operators, neighbours, and nearby homes. Switching to electric equipment helps reduce emissions, improve local air quality and create quieter outdoor spaces.
Electric lawn equipment rebates in the Central Okanagan
The Lawn Swap: Go Electric Rebate makes it easier to make the switch to electric. Through the program, eligible Central Okanagan residents can receive a rebate when they recycle old gas-powered lawn equipment and purchase approved electric alternatives, such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, trimmers or chainsaws.
Before you apply
- The annual deadline to apply is November 15, or until resources are depleted.
- Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
- A one-time rebate is available per household.
- Old gas-powered equipment must be recycled.
- New electric equipment must meet noise rating limits.
- Lawnmowers: up to 75 dB
- Leaf blowers: up to 65 dB
- Trimmers and chainsaws: No noise level limit, but quieter models are encouraged.
How the program works
Step 1: Purchase new electric lawn equipment and keep your receipt
- Receipt or invoice must be from the same calendar year as the rebate application.
Step 2: Recycle old gas-powered lawn equipment and obtain proof
- Proof of recycling must be from the same calendar year as the rebate application.
- ABC Recycling, Knox Mountain Metals, and Planet Earth ($5 fee) provide recycling receipts that you can use as proof.
- Asquith Road Transfer Station and Glenmore Landfill* (fees apply) do not provide recycling receipts—you must take two photos of your gas-powered lawn equipment (one close-up and one with facility in background) when you drop off.
- Include the model and engine type (2 or 4-stroke engine) of your old equipment for your rebate application form.
Gas tanks must be empty. Drain and properly dispose of all remaining fluids from your old lawn equipment before recycling before recycling before recycling before recycling.
*Note: metal recycling drop-off at the Glenmore Landfill is through the scale entrance, not in the general recycling area.
