Backyard composters available again for Central Okanagan residents

The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) is once again making backyard composters available exclusively for Central Okanagan residents through an online pre-sale running March 2 to 31, 2026. Composters are available for $45, including tax and delivery, and will be delivered directly to residents’ homes in time for spring gardening.

Diverting waste from landfills helps extend landfill life and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In the Central Okanagan, more than one-third of household waste is made up of food waste that can be composted at home. By using a backyard composter and recycling paper, plastic and glass packaging, households could reduce their garbage to just one or two small bags per week.

“Using a backyard composter can help reduce your garbage volume while creating “black gold” for your garden,” says Cynthia Coates, Supervisor of Solid Waste Services with the RDCO. “Composting is the natural process of recycling organic materials into a valuable fertilizer. You cannot beat the satisfaction of making your own soil enhancer for your garden with kitchen scraps and yard materials that would otherwise go to the landfill.”

There is a limited supply of 300 backyard composters available for pre-order for $45 each (tax and delivery included), a considerable savings from the regular $100 retail price.
