As bears prepare to hibernate, the Regional District of Central Okanagan and WildSafeBC are reminding residents to manage attractants around their homes and yards to reduce conflict with bears. Attractants include garbage, fruit, BBQs and pet food left out unattended.
Central Okanagan residents are invited to recycle their spare vehicle tires, bike tires and inner tubes on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the RDCO’s annual, free tire recycling event.
On Saturday, July 18, North Westside residents will have an opportunity to dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste products (HHW) responsibly and locally for free. From 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. residents can bring household hazardous waste materials to the North Westside Road Transfer Station.
The North Westside Road transfer station will accept large household items for a cost of $20 per truckload between June 24 to July 8, 2026, during regular operating hours.
On Saturday, June 13, 2026, Traders Cove residents will have a special opportunity to dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste products.
Beginning May 1, 2026, Recycle BC is responsible for residential household packaging and paper recycling in the Central Okanagan. Part of this change includes the introduction of a new pink box for flexible plastics and a grey box for glass bottles and jars. That means residents with curbside collection can recycle more, right at the curb.
Preventing wildlife conflicts starts at the curb by properly managing attractants, especially household garbage.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) is once again making backyard composters available exclusively for Central Okanagan residents through an online pre-sale running March 2 to 31, 2026. Composters are available for $45, including tax and delivery, and will be delivered directly to residents’ homes in time for spring gardening.
