Biofilter replacement at Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant begins Oct. 6
The biofilter is an important system that treats and reduces odorous air
The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) is committed to mitigating odours from the Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant and ensuring the facility operates effectively for the community.
The RDCO will begin replacing the plant’s biofilter on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025. The work is expected to take about two weeks.
The biofilter is an important system that treats and reduces odorous air collected during the wastewater treatment process. The plant’s biofilter has a typical lifespan of 3–5 years. The RDCO monitors the biofilter and replaces it proactively to mitigate any performance decreases. Recently, the biofilter media showed signs of premature degradation and will now be replaced.
During the replacement, residents may notice occasional periods of odour. This is temporary. Once the new filter biofilter is fully active, odour control will return to its normal level.
We apologize for any short-term inconvenience this work may cause. It will be completed as quickly as possible to reduce the impact on the community.
