Regional Agricultural Strategy sets the stage for a thriving future in Central Okanagan

Strengthening the region’s agricultural sector

The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) presented the final, updated Regional Agricultural Strategy (RAS), a forward-looking plan that strengthens the region’s agricultural sector and supports a resilient, sustainable future for farming communities that are a vital network connecting the Central Okanagan.

Agriculture is a cornerstone of the Central Okanagan’s identity, economy and quality of life. With growing pressures from population growth, climate change and economic headwinds, the RAS provides a coordinated regional approach to address cross-jurisdictional challenges and unlocks new opportunities for innovation, collaboration and long-term prosperity.

“The updated strategy provides a roadmap for supporting farmers and ensuring agriculture continues to feed our community, economy and future,” said Mariah VanZerr, Regional Planning Manager, RDCO. “It reflects the voices of our residents, farmers and government partners on how best to work together to support agriculture in the Central Okanagan.”

The strategy builds on the original Agricultural Plan established in 2005 and responds to priorities identified in the Regional Growth Strategy Priority Projects Plan. Phase 2 of the update began in October 2024, engaging stakeholders through surveys, focus groups, and partner meetings. A total of 279 survey responses were received, with strong support for the strategy’s vision and goals, emphasizing the need for:

  • Water security and conservation
  • Support for farmworker housing
  • Policy consistency across jurisdictions
  • Incorporation of Indigenous knowledge
  • Innovation in farming practices
  • Emergency preparedness specifically for agriculture (i.e. livestock)

Extensive consultation with community partners and key organizations provided a platform for input about the importance of supporting a strong economy and a thriving agricultural sector. The Agricultural Land Commission and the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food expressed strong support for the strategy, particularly its alignment with provincial regulations and its emphasis on protecting farmland and supporting small and medium-scale producers.

Interior Health also expressed support for the strategy from a food security and social wellbeing perspective, “It is both exciting and inspiring to see the RDCO take a leadership role on this critical issue, which connects the health and wellness of residents with economic opportunities, cultural heritage and land use planning,” said Heather Deegan, Interior Health, Director Population & Public Health, Families and Communities.

The RAS sets a 10-year vision for agriculture in the Central Okanagan, ensuring that farms thrive, farmland is protected, and the region continues to benefit from a strong local food system. It positions RDCO and its partners to respond proactively to emerging challenges and opportunities, while preserving the agricultural heritage that defines the region.
