Making the outdoors accessible with Adaptive Adventures
Not every park is designed with equal accessibility, but with the right equipment, creativity and community support, every park can become a place where everyone belongs.
Not every park is designed with equal accessibility, but with the right equipment, creativity and community support, every park can become a place where everyone belongs.
Since 2001, Adaptive Adventures has been guided by a simple but powerful belief: the outdoors should be accessible to all, regardless of ability. Through a growing partnership with the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO), that vision is becoming a reality in our regional parks.

Expanding access through adaptive programming
Adaptive Adventures delivers a range of inclusive outdoor experiences, from local day programs to multi-day wilderness expeditions. Their Adaptive Outdoor Recreation programs offer accessible, day-based experiences close to home, while Adaptive Wilderness Expeditions provide opportunities to explore more remote backcountry destinations.
Participants span all age groups, from children and youth to adults and seniors, and include individuals with physical, cognitive and complex support needs. Each program is thoughtfully adapted to meet participants where they are at, ensuring everyone can safely and confidently take part.
From paddling on Okanagan Lake to exploring trail networks, Adaptive Adventures demonstrates that there is truly a place for everyone in nature.

Regional parks a platform for inclusion
RDCO regional parks play a vital role in making these experiences possible. Accessible trail systems, scenic waterways and welcoming park spaces provide the perfect setting for inclusive outdoor recreation.
One standout example is the annual Nature Detectives Spring Break Camp, hosted at Mission Creek Regional Park. Designed for children aged 7–14, this program blends exploration, learning and play in a barrier-free environment. With support from RDCO staff, each day is filled with hands-on activities and themed adventures that encourage curiosity, connection and confidence outdoors.

A community effort
The impact of this partnership continues to grow. In 2025 alone, 588 participants took part in Adaptive Adventures programming within RDCO parks, supported by an incredible 818 volunteers.
As a non-profit organization, Adaptive Adventures relies heavily on volunteers, donors and community partners to deliver these experiences. Their support helps keep programs affordable and accessible, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent participation.
This strong network of community support is what makes inclusive outdoor recreation possible in our region.

Creating meaningful outdoor experiences
Together, RDCO and Adaptive Adventures are helping create unforgettable outdoor experiences across our park system, from adaptive cycling along the Mission Creek Greenway to kayaking at Bertram Creek Regional Park and hiking in Scenic Canyon and Rose Valley.
Every outing is carefully tailored to foster joy, inclusion and connection, both with nature and with one another.
Because when we remove barriers, we open the door for everyone to experience the benefits of the outdoors.
