For more than 25 years, Alison Campbell Urness has been helping people discover the natural wonders of Regional District of Central Okanagan parks. Since joining the RDCO in 1999 as a Park Interpreter with Visitor Services, Alison has become a familiar face to countless residents and visitors, inspiring curiosity about the natural world and fostering a deeper appreciation for the outdoors.

Originally calling places such as Calgary, Jervis Inlet, Korea, and the Okanagan home, Alison brings a wealth of experiences to her role. What keeps her passionate about her work after more than two decades is simple: every day offers an opportunity to learn something new about the Okanagan and connect with new people.

One of Alison’s proudest accomplishments has been helping create interpretive exhibits at the Environmental Education Centre for the Okanagan (EECO). Yet, it’s often the personal connections she makes through park programs that leave the greatest impact. She recalls the rewarding moments when former program participants return and share how their experiences sparked an interest in science and nature. Hearing a child say, “I remember you. I’m going to be a scientist like you when I grow up,” is the kind of feedback that makes the work especially meaningful.

A love of the outdoors has always been a guiding force in Alison’s life. She says she got started in her field simply by spending time playing, living and working in natural areas, a passion that continues to shape both her career and her personal life. When she’s not leading park programs or sharing her knowledge with visitors, you’ll likely find her skiing, cycling, running or exploring the mountains. Whether it’s backcountry skiing, mountain biking or a long trail run, Alison is happiest outside.

Among colleagues and friends, Alison is known for her boundless energy and enthusiasm for adventure. She jokes that she has a “diesel engine,” allowing her to stay outdoors for hours longer than most people are willing to join her. It’s a quality that serves her well in a role dedicated to helping others experience the incredible natural spaces found throughout the region.

Through her knowledge, passion and dedication, Alison Campbell Urness has inspired generations of park visitors to connect with nature and explore the outdoors. Her work is a reminder of the important role RDCO Parks staff play in creating meaningful experiences that help people discover, appreciate and care for the special places that make the Okanagan such a remarkable place to live and visit.
