Trail smarts: Cracking the RDCO trail rating code

Ever wonder what those green, blue, and black symbols at the trailhead really mean?

Ever wonder what those green, blue, and black symbols at the trailhead really mean? RDCO uses the IMBA Trail Difficulty Rating System—an internationally recognized standard used by parks and trail networks across North America—to help you choose the trail that best matches your skills and comfort level.

Think of it as a skill matchmaker for the outdoors.

Trail difficulty ratings
🟢Green Circle  Smooth, gentle, and beginner friendly.
🟦 Blue Square  Moderately challenging, with some roots, rocks, or steeper climbs.
Black Diamond  Advanced terrain featuring technical challenges, steeper grades, and rougher surfaces.
◆◆ Double Black Diamond Expert‑level trails only—expect narrow tread, large obstacles, and serious commitment.
Note: There are no Double Black Diamond trails in RDCO regional parks.

This rating system is applied to all designated trails in RDCO regional parks. Trail difficulty information is posted at trailheads and along the route, as shown on trail blazes throughout the park system.

Using a consistent rating system means fewer surprises and a more enjoyable experience. Whether you’re heading out for a relaxed walk, a family bike ride, or a heart pumping challenge, IMBA ratings help you explore with confidence.

Pro tip: Trail conditions can change with weather and seasons—always use your judgment and be prepared.
